The Blackmore Club Newsletter - MAY Edition

07 May 2019

The name 'Around and Back' commemorates the St Peter's College Boat Club's first race and victory in 1862 against the Pelican Club in a race up to a buoy, around it and back to the start line.

President Report - Philip Marshall (SHT 1964)

The Old Scholars who rowed at Saints continue to support the St Peter’s College Boat Club as members of the Blackmore Club. The past season has seen the Club continue with the ever-popular sausage sizzles for the boys after training; with increased numbers, become coaches through the Club’s “Give Back” ethos and, present more Blackmore Medals than ever before to the Saints winning Head of the River crews (refer to HoR Summary below).

The past year saw the Blackmore Club launch its own website www.blackmoreclub.com.au Facebook and Instagram sites. With over 5,000 Facebook views in the week of the 2019 Head of the River, and 10,000 post engagements in the month of March, this medium has proven its success. Blackmore supporters’ merchandise is also available via the website https://www.blackmoreclub.com.au/shop/rowing-supporters-shop as is the functionality to become a member on-line.

Through this social media presence “old” old scholars are becoming more aware of the Club and taking out Life Membership. Additionally, this year the Blackmore Club provided the opportunity for Parents of rowers to become members and demonstrate their support of the Boat Club into the future.

SPSC Regatta

The Blackmore Club would like to thank everyone who was involved in the organisation of  the SPSC Regatta at West Lakes. A particular mention should go to the work of Kate Southcott and the Parents’ Committee for their organisation of the day in the Schools’ role as host of the regatta. The outstanding catering throughout the day by The Olfactory Inn is recorded with appreciation. The success of the day was ensured by the leadership of our Director of Rowing, Tim Hennessy, together with dedication to the boys. The Blackmore Club was also involved in the day’s proceedings, providing a BBQ for all Saints Rowers.

We would also like to recognise our regatta major sponsor SARAH Constructions, and we thank them for their on-going support of the program.

2018 Quad Scull Boat Christening

On 15th of November 2018, the Boat Club christened three new stern coxed Sykes Quad Sculls, the Richard Reid, the John Dempster, and the Charles May to be used by the Junior and Intermediate squads. The Boat Club also christened the latest Sykes bow coxed four, the William Wyatt which was later raced at the Australian National Rowing Championships at Penrith.

William Wyatt used to be at the start of 'Wyatt and Allen' House, but his name was removed when the houses were combined to become 'School and Allen'. He was one of the founders of the school.

John Dempster was the only other teacher apart from the first Headmaster (Theodore Wilson), when the school started. He actually did most of the teaching in those early days and pioneered the School's first organised sport, including buying equipment from his own funds.

Charles May was a long serving teacher in the early days of the school. He was 'Third Master' 1850-1852, then came back as Second Master (Deputy Headmaster) from 1855 - 1873.

Richard Read was the captain of the school in 1851. He was the first St Peter's College old scholar to be a master (teacher) back at the school and the first to be ordained.

The Blackmore Club committee cooked a barbecue for the all of the boys to enjoy.

The Boat Club was delighted to have our Headmaster, Tim Browning, in attendance at this important event in the Boat Club’s calendar.
